197 Community Field Study

All students in the department are required to satisfy four units of 197 Field Study coursework in their respective major doing community service work (paid or unpaid internship or volunteer) with organizations and programs that engage and support underrepresented communities on-campus and in the surrounding community.  The idea is that students can apply and further enrich their knowledge of the study of communities of color and the qualitative appreciation of their agency and varied productions.

Students are required to complete a minimum of 45 hours of field study work per unit of credit (4 units = 180 hours).  Please contact a major advisor for the 197 field study form that is required before students can enroll.  197 units are also available during the summer.  Below are some examples of field study sites that previous students have used to fulfill their 197 requirement.
