Designated Emphasis in Indigenous Language Revitalization

Graduate students in any Berkeley PhD program may apply to join the Designated Emphasis in Indigenous Language Revitalization, which is supervised by a Graduate Group in Indigenous Language Revitalization (and housed administratively in the Department of Linguistics). A Designated Emphasis (link is external) is like a graduate minor.

Preference for students who have taken their qualifying exams already and working in social sciences. Program provides training in qualitative and mixed methods research in order to understand contemporary social change process in US cities. $10k a year for two years. April 2018.

Catherine and William L. Magistretti Graduate Fellowship. For study of language, cultures, history, and societies of all the Asian Continent, construed broadly and diaspora as well. Between $20k-40k. College of Letters & Science Graduate Fellowship. Must be nominated by the department. Preference given to incoming or pre-doctoral student. Due around late January.

 

The R. Kirk Underhill Graduate Fellowship. For study of British Isles, British Empire, and its legacies (including Canada and the Commonwealth), or Britain’s relationship with the European Community and the United States. Up to $20k. College of Letters & Science Graduate Fellowship. Must be nominated by the department. Preference given to incoming or pre-doctoral student. Due around late January.

 

The David and Aileen Wang Family Fellowship. For study of any area in Arts & Humanities (awarded in even years) or Social Sciences (awarded in odd years). Up to $20k. American Philosophical Society and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Native American Scholars Initiative (NASI) Fellowships. The APS seeks applicants for predoctoral, postdoctoral, and short-term research fellowships open to scholars at all stages of their careers, especially Native American scholars in training, tribal college and university faculty members, and other scholars working closely with Native communities on projects. These funding opportunities are supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Native American Scholars Initiative (NASI). Fellows will be associated with the APS’s new Center for Native American and Indigenous Research (CNAIR), which aims to promote greater collaboration between scholars, archives, and indigenous communities.

CLIR Mellon Dissertation Fellowship in Original Sources

The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is pleased to offer fellowships generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for dissertation research in the humanities or related social sciences using original sources. The program offers about fifteen competitively awarded fellowships a year in amounts up to $25,000. Each provides a stipend of $2,000 per month for periods ranging from 9-12 months. Each fellow receives an additional $1,000 upon participating in a symposium on research in original sources and submitting a report acceptable to CLIR on the research experience.

The Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF)

The Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled in PhD programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research on non-US topics. Seventy fellowships are awarded annually. Fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a per-fellowship average of $22,000. The fellowship includes participation in an SSRC-funded interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research.
