Bio & Research Interests
Associate Professor in the School of Social Welfare at UC Berkeley and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UC San Francisco. He received his B.A, from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from UCLA. At UC Berkeley, Dr. Aguilera directs the Digital Health Equity and Access Lab (dHEAL), the Latinx Center of Excellence (LCOE) and at UCSF, he directs the Latino Mental Health Research Program (LMHRP). Dr. Aguilera’s research is focused on developing and testing technology-based interventions to address health disparities in low-income and vulnerable populations. Dr. Aguilera’s work has focused on utilizing mobile phone technology to disseminate mental health interventions. His interventions have primarily focused on using text messaging which has been applied 1) as an adjunct for cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT), 2) a public mental health intervention for COVID-19 related stress and anxiety and 3) a machine learning based intervention to personalize messages to motivate physical activity for individuals with diabetes and depression symptoms.
