The health and ongoing life of Indigenous languages is a central commitment of Indigenous peoples around the world. Focusing on Native North America, this course centers the perspectives, strategies, and challenges of language revitalization from within Indigenous communities. The course introduces historical and cultural contexts and theories, ethical issues, and practical strategies of language revitalization.

Students will be required to participate in on-line class meetings, which will include Indigenous language activists as guest speakers; complete short response papers and exams based on readings; and create a revitalization tool in collaboration with an Indigenous language program.
