“We are what we eat,” so the saying goes. But clearly, the relationship between food and identity is much more complicated than that. Food touches all aspects of cultural, social, political, and economic life. This seminar focuses on the cultural politics of food, and it does so by examining the complex processes that (a) produce the cultural meanings and values that we associate with different foods and (b) create the social practices and policies that shape food consumption, production, circulation, and commoditization. The seminar takes food as a prism to understand the cultural politics of remembrance, exclusion, recupertaion, invention, and empowerment. Active participation is required.
