Berkeley Writers at Work: Catherine Ceniza Choy

Catherine Ceniza Choy, Professor of Ethnic Studies, will be the featured writer in the Fall 2017 Berkeley Writers at Work Series. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 11, from noon to 1:30 pm in the Morrison Library, 101 Main Library, on the UC Berkeley campus.
Professor Choy is the author of the award-winning book Empire of Care: Nursing and Migration in Filipino American History (Duke University Press, 2003), which explores how and why the Philippines became the world's leading exporter of nurses to the United States. Kimberly Alidio, reviewing the book in the Journal of American Ethnic History, writes “Choy’s study effectively expands the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of American ethnic history.”
Another of Choy’s books, Global Families: A History of Asian International Adoption in America, was published by NYU Press in 2013. Of Global Families, the San Francisco Book Review said, “Catherine Choy brings to life the history of this unique way to create a family.” And the Journal of Asian American Studies noted, “Concise, provocative, and utilizing expert resources, Choy’s work greatly assists in the larger discussion of, and questions concerning global family making and points of view of the adoptees often left out of this discussion.”
Prior to coming to UC Berkeley, where she served as chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies, Choy was an assistant professor of American Studies and a cofounding member of the Asian American Studies Initiative at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She received her Ph.D. in History from UCLA and her B.A. in History from Pomona College. The daughter of Filipino immigrants, she was born and raised in New York City.
Choy is the co-editor of the new Brill book series Gendering the Trans-Pacific World: Diaspora, Empire, and Race. Additionally, she writes posts about academia and writing on LinkedIn. She has held distinguished lectureships and visiting appointments at Yonsei University, Mahidol University, Hitotsubashi University, and Northwestern University. Her research expertise includes Asian American history, Filipino American studies, immigration history, adoption studies, and nursing history.
The Berkeley Writers at Work series provides a venue for campus writers to talk about their writing process, from getting ideas, to drafting, to revising. Professor Choy will read from her work, be interviewed about her writing process, and answer questions from the audience.
