Journalist Katya Cengel will discuss her new book, Exiled: From the Killing Fields of Cambodia to California and Back (Potomac Books, 2018) which follows the stories of four Cambodian families as they confront criminal deportation 40 years after their resettlement in the U.S. In her telling, Cengel finds that violence comes in many forms and that trauma is passed down through generations.
Katya Cengel has written for The New York Times Magazine and The Washington Post, among other publications, and currently teaches journalism at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Aside from her new book, which she will discuss at this event, she is also the author of Bluegrass Baseball: A Year in the Minor League Life (Nebraska, 2012). Cengel has been awarded grants from the International Reporting Project, International Women’s Media Foundation and International Center for Journalists. She was a features and news writer at the Louisville Courier-Journal from 2003 to 2011.
